When hearing a “no” from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA judge Blake McGrath, Lauren Lyn instantly felt defeated. A few seconds later, Blake surprised her with a “no, to going home!” When she realized she had made the Top 22, Lauren said she felt “so overcome with emotion that I cried uncontrollably for about an hour.”
Originally from Montego Bay, Jamaica, Lauren started dancing at the age of 13 after her family moved to Canada. Lauren’s love for dance developed while watching her sister audition for their high school dance company. Needless to say she didn’t leave the building until she was accepted, “and soon after, dance became my life,” said Lauren. Since then, this salsa dancer has trained in American style ballroom, Latin, African dance, hip-hop and modern.
Lauren has competed in the Toronto Salsa Festival, the Six Degrees Salsa Competition and also appeared with Artists in Motion on MuchMusic’s New.Music.Live.: Best Dance Crew, which they won. Lauren has performed with Lady Gaga and Divine Brown and has also worked with Canadian choreographer Laurieann Gibson.
Lauren believes Canadian dancers are the best in the world because “we are exposed to a highly multicultural community, influenced by all forms of dance, creating the most unique and diverse dancers in the world,” said Lauren.
Bringing her positivity, personality and passion to the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA stage, Lauren hopes that viewers will connect with her dancing. “I would like viewers to know that I am someone who never gives up. I fight for my dreams and they should do the same,” said Lauren.
