The Best Outdoor Places for a Summer Dance

As we’ve talked about recently, taking your summer dance moves outside is pretty awesome. One of the best things about it is you can literally bust it out anywhere – assuming you aren’t breaking the law of course. Here’s just a few places I’ve tried that were particularly special.

Street festivals. Salsa on St. Clair anyone? Even if it’s not an official dance festival, many of these outdoor events contain various “dead areas” which can be exploited by a few adventurous dancers and a Bose speaker.

Boat Cruise. No, it doesn’t have to be your honeymoon to the Bahamas – most shore-based cities offer summer dance cruises, and Toronto is no exception. Watch out for the waves!

Outdoor stage. Many a “Summer Shakespeare” stage has been exploited for it’s smooth flooring and excellent acoustics. Can’t find one nearby? How about a Gazebo?

The beach. Bet you’re surprised I didn’t mention this one earlier – the beach is definitely a great spot for a summer dance, so long as it doesn’t get too crowded. Try going on a cloudy day to reduce the traffic.

In waist-high water. Balance issues? Let the water protect you from any nasty falls, while giving your legs a great workout! I once had a summer dance lesson with a student with a spinal injury here, and she never felt so safe. Bonus points if you can keep up with a salsa.

Restaurant patio. You might need permission from the owner, but who wouldn’t want some free entertainment? If your summer dance moves are fresh enough, you might even score yourself a regular gig 😉

Rooftop patio. One of my favourites – great dancing and an amazing view. Perfect for a romantic evening.

Market square. Toronto boasts a number of open squares, graced by little but smooth tile. Why not put it to good use with your summer dance moves? Great for flash mobs.

Frozen-over water fountain. I’m kidding – what fountain is frozen in summer? But I DID try it, once. Not as romantic as it sounds, and you’ve gotta be pretty crazy to try dancing on ice 😉
