Motivation Masters: Tony Robbins

Back for more energy-boosting wisdom from the masters? Well today, I’m pulling from perhaps the greatest one of them all: Tony Robbins.

If you haven’t heard of Tony Robbins (seriously, where have you been?) he is an American author, entrepreneur, philanthropist and life coach. He first started speaking at the age of 17, and has worked with big names like Bill Clinton, Wayne Gretzky, and Hugh Jackman. Here’s just a tiny bit of his philosophy on success.

Explore your web.

One of the most important ways to align yourself to be successful is getting to know yourself. Deeply. As Tony himself puts it: “Understand the needs, beliefs, and emotions that are controlling you.” As you explore this inner “web”, you gradually come to understand where you are unconsciously holding yourself back from success.

It’s safe to say that all of us carry some part of ourselves around that secretly fears we are not good or deserving enough to become a truly remarkable dancer in our own right. Understanding how you sabotage your efforts allows you to refocus that energy in more productive, self-affirming directions.

Decide, right now, what you’re going to focus on.

Every moment of every day, you have a choice: You can focus on what you want, you can focus on what you don’t want, or you can not focus at all. The latter will leave you drifting through life, waiting for random chance to make you happy. But it doesn’t help to focus on what we don’t want either – all too often, we just bring that thing right to us.

Only focusing on what we do want will move us in the direction we want to go. According to Tony: “Once you decide to focus on something, give it a meaning. That meaning will produce emotion, which then drives action.” In other words, if you make a goal meaningful to you, enough to get yourself fired up about it, that’s how you’ll start producing the results you want.

You don’t form your target – you uncover it.

Our experiences, whether we know it or not, have pre-disposed us towards wanting to be good – staggeringly good – at something. That something is always pulling us towards it, and we can follow it by seeking out the activities that we most enjoy. That’s why you “uncover” your target – it’s already out there, waiting for you.

For example, I grew up very shy (believe it or not), with few friends, and yet I craved connection, being a part of a group that accepted me. So as soon as I realized that “wait, I can get close and move with all these different people… and I don’t even have to TALK?” Well, let’s just say I’ve been hooked ever since 🙂

I’m saving my personal favourite for last… See you next week!
