Dance Classes for Teens

FALL/WINTER 2024/2025 TERM: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2024 TO SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 2025
There will be NO kids classes on Sunday, October 13 & Monday, October 14, 2024, for Thanksgiving, and NO classes from Saturday, December 21 to Saturday, January 4, 2025 for Christmas Break. Classes resume Sunday, January 5, 2025.

About Our Dance Classes

You’ll find your second home at Joy of Dance Centre. We offer the best teen dance classes with the best teachers in Toronto. We have Ballet, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Jazz and more. You’ll learn technique, style and choreography from our qualified teachers. Our teachers will teach you, push you and inspire you to go for it.

Ballet for Teens - Level 1

Teen Ballet: Rec and R.A.D. Exam Prep Classes

Joy of Dance is thrilled to offer Teen ballet classes for recreational students as well as more serious dancers. We welcome all dancers who are new to dancing or have up to 5 years of experience. The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is an internationally recognized organization which trains ballet teachers, provides a fantastic syllabus for students to learn and offers exams to help promote goal setting, motivation and personal achievement in students. Our Ballet teachers are all registered teachers with the RAD and offer the chance for our Teen students to take part in this fantastic system of training.

TEEN Ballet is a year long program. Showcase performance is in June.

LEVEL 1


Teacher: Rachel Zinck

Once/week Recreational Class: Thursday 4 – 5:30 p.m. (Full year or 2-terms September – June)

No Prerequisite.

Course will include: Foundational ballet training for beginner students who want to experience ballet. Vocabulary based on the RAD Grades 1-3 syllabi. There is no exam at this level as we feel students need time to develop their strengths without the pressure of an exam. This course develops the skills necessary to proceed into Level 2 after a full year. Students will perform in the June Showcase.

Fees: $444 for term + HST.  (Showcase costume fee $60-$80)

Ballet for Teens - Level 2

Teen Ballet: Rec and R.A.D. Exam Prep Classes

Joy of Dance is thrilled to offer Teen ballet classes for recreational students as well as more serious dancers. We welcome all dancers who are new to dancing or have up to 5 years of experience. The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is an internationally recognized organization which trains ballet teachers, provides a fantastic syllabus for students to learn and offers exams to help promote goal setting, motivation and personal achievement in students. Our Ballet teachers are all registered teachers with the RAD and offer the chance for our Teen students to take part in this fantastic system of training.

TEEN Ballet is a year long program. Showcase performance is in June.

EXAM TRACK: Twice a week students can choose between recreational or exam track. Exam Track dancers work towards presenting the syllabus work for an external examiner. There will be two mandatory mock exams in preparation for the RAD exam. Private lessons are available to students at a reduce rate. We want all students to feel prepared for their exams.

LEVEL 2


Teacher: Rachel Zinck

  • Recreational and Exam First Class: Thursdays 5:45-7:15 p.m. (Full year or 2-terms September – June) Prerequisite: Teen Ballet Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Recreational and Exam 2nd Class: TBA (both include Pointe) Prerequisite: 3 years of ballet training or teacher permission)

Recreational Course will include: Ballet training at the RAD Intermediate Foundation level developing strength, flexibility, technical ability and artistry. Students will perform in the June Showcase.

RAD Exam Course will include: Ballet training at the RAD Intermediate Foundation level developing strength, flexibility, technical ability and artistry with the goal of presenting the syllabus work in an exam with an external examiner. Students will be required to attend two Mock Exams and are strongly suggested to take private coaching lessons. Students will perform in the June Showcase.

FEES:  (Showcase costume fee $60-$80)

  • Recreational/Exam First Class = $444/term + HST.
  • Recreational/Exam Second Class= TBA

Please Note: It is our goal at Joy of Dance to prepare each teen to the best of their ability for their exam. If a student progress has been delayed we will contact the family and discuss a plan to ensure that student’s best option for success. Solutions might include private lessons, or a decision to not take the exam that year. This will be a collective decision.

R.A.D. Exam Track dancers must register for twice weekly classes. (Pointe is not required for the exam.)

Prerequisite: Teen Ballet Level 2 once-a-week for 2 years OR twice-a-week for 1 year or equivalent training.

Recreational Course will include: Ballet training at the RAD Intermediate Foundation level developing strength, flexibility, technical ability and artistry. All students will perform in the June Showcase.

RAD Exam Course includes: Ballet training at the RAD Intermediate Foundation level developing strength, flexibility, technique and artistry with the goal of presenting the syllabus work in an exam with an external examiner provided by the RAD. Students will be required to attend two Mock Exams and are strongly suggested to take private coaching lessons. Students will perform in the June Showcase.

Pointe Classes: Available to recreational and exam students who are taking two classes per week and have been given permission to join.

EXAMS: Depending on the RAD Grade level entered the price for each student will be between $150 – $160. CASH ONLY. This fee will be due in March 1 of the exam year.

Recreational Course will include: Ballet training at the RAD Intermediate level developing strength, flexibility, technical ability and artistry. All students will perform in the June Showcase.

Pointe Classes: Available to recreational students who are taking two ballet classes (the second one can be a level 3 or adult jump in class) per week and have been given permission to join.

FEES:   TBD per term + HST (Showcase costume fee $60-$80)

Ballroom for Teens

Ballroom has a special magic that can’t be explained. Our kids class helps students gain confidence, posture and character all while having fun. Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Swing…students will learn a wide variety of dances.

Competetive Lyrical 12-Teens

Our competitive contemporary dance program is for students who are reaching for a higher level of dance and are committed to performing routines at a competitive level at Provincial championships in the spring. For the past five competitive seasons, the Teams have won top awards at each competition.

 

Full year program September 2024-June 2025
Class Time: Saturdays 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Program includes:

  • 2 hour Competitive class and Teen Lyrical 1.5 or Ballet
  • 4 competitions

Competitive Hip Hop 10-Teen

Our competitive hip hop dance program is for students who are reaching for a higher level of dance and are committed to performing routines at a competitive level at Provincial championships in the spring. For the past five competitive seasons, the Teams have won top awards at each competition.

Full year program September 2024-June 2025
Class Time: Sundays 9-11 a.m.

Program includes:

  • 2 hour competition class and one compulsory class
  • 4 competitions

Hip Hop for Teens

Explore movement based in street dance styles, focusing on textures, rhythm and intention!

Irish Dancing for Teens

The Broadway stage shows Riverdance and Lord of the Dance took the world by storm – making traditional reels and jigs mainstream. Now everyone can join the fun of the toe-tapping rhythms of Ireland with our teen dance lessons.

Jazz for Teens

Kim’s teen dance lessons are a dynamic style of urban jazz. Whether it’s swag or a fierce pop performance routine, students learn the moves and technique while dancing it out and “leaving it on the dance floor.”

Lyrical Teens

The lyrical contemporary dance classes for teens are definitely something to be experienced. In these classes our instructors use their strong Contemporary backgrounds for teaching technique and the fundamentals. They have a unique and captivating way of choreographing movements to give expression to lyrics and music.

Musical Theatre for Teens
 

Musical Theatre combines it all. Our kids class gets them to work on their triple threat – dance, sing & act. Broadway is brought to Broadview. Students will learn to develop their performance skills as they learn choreography and lyrics to a popular musical production. It’s fun and entertaining. (Lip sync singing – all are welcome)
